To mark the second National Day for Truth and Reconciliation on September 30, the Cable Public Affairs Channel (CPAC) will devote a full day of special programming that allows viewers to reflect on the experiences of Indigenous Peoples across the country and the long and continuing road to reconciliation.
In partnership with the National Centre for Truth and Reconciliation and APTN, CPAC will broadcast the national commemorative gathering Remembering the Children: National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, which will take place at LeBreton Flats Park in Ottawa beginning at 1 pm ET/ 10 am PT.
The one-hour live broadcast will honour residential school survivors, their families, their communities, and all the children who never made it home. The one-of-a-kind event will be led by children and residential school survivors.
CPAC will also broadcast special programming from its archives throughout the day that takes viewers through the events that led to Canada’s reconciliation path and looks forward to the next steps towards reconciliation. Programming starts at 10 am ET/ 7 am PT.
“CPAC is committed to doing its part to advance reconciliation with Indigenous communities,” says CPAC President and CEO Christa Dickenson. “We are honoured to be part of making this public commemoration accessible across the country. Reckoning with the painful history and ongoing impacts of residential schools is important work 365 days a year.”
In addition to the national commemorative gathering from LeBreton Flats, CPAC’s archival programming will give viewers a historical look at the key moments that have shaped Canada’s reconciliation process, including: highlights from the Truth and Reconciliation Commission’s work; the release of the Commission’s final report in 2015; and programming that explores the future of reconciliation.
