Governor General Mary Simon presides over the swearing-in of federal ministers in a ceremony at Rideau Hall as Prime Minister Justin Trudeau makes changes to his cabinet. The shuffle comes following the recent resignation of Deputy Prime Minister and Finance Minister Chrystia Freeland from cabinet and amid increasing calls for Trudeau to step down as Liberal party leader.

The shuffle brings eight Liberal MPs into cabinet while four ministers are shuffled into new portfolios.

The newly appointed ministers include Rachel Bendayan (official languages, associate minister of public safety), Élisabeth Brière (national revenue), Terry Duguid (sport, minister responsible for Prairies Economic Development Canada), Nathaniel Erskine-Smith (housing), Darren Fisher (veterans affairs, associate minister of national defence), David McGuinty (public safety), Ruby Sahota (democratic institutions, minister responsible for the Federal Economic Development Agency for Southern Ontario) and Joanne Thompson (seniors).

Among the ministers promoted into new roles are Anita Anand (transport and internal trade), Gary Anandasangaree (Crown-Indigenous relations, northern affairs and minister responsible for the Canadian Northern Economic Development Agency), Steven MacKinnon (employment, labour) and Ginette Petitpas Taylor (Treasury Board president).
