PM Trudeau Announces Immediate Ban on Assault Weapons – May 1, 2020
On Parliament Hill, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announces the immediate ban of over 1,500 military-grade assault-style firearms in Canada. The prohibited firearms can no longer be legally used, sold or imported. There will be a two-year amnesty period for individuals who already own these weapons, and the government says it will implement a buyback program to compensate owners. The prime minister is joined at the news conference by Deputy Prime Minister Chrystia Freeland, Justice Minister David Lametti and Public Safety Minister Bill Blair, as well as Joël Lightbound, the parliamentary secretary to Minister Blair.
