Malala Yousafzai Addresses Canadian Parliament
Malala Yousafzai, the Nobel prizewinning advocate for women’s and girls’ rights, addresses a joint sitting of the Senate and House of Commons of Canada on April 12, 2017, after being bestowed with honorary Canadian citizenship. Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, Senate Speaker George Furey, and House of Commons Speaker Geoff Regan also make remarks. Ms. Yousafzai’s campaign for girls’ education rights in Pakistan made her the target of an assassination attempt by the Taliban in October 2012, when she was fifteen years old. In October 2014, Canada’s House of Commons unanimously supported a motion by Prime Minister Stephen Harper to grant her honorary Canadian citizenship.
