Commemoration of the 75th Anniversary of the Liberation of Auschwitz-Birkenau
The Association of Canadian Studies organizes a series of discussions in Ottawa to commemorate the 75th anniversary of the liberation of the Auschwitz-Birkenau concentration camp. Hosted by Senators Marc Gold and Donna Dasko, the event features speakers including holocaust survivor Eva Kuper, former Governor General Michaëlle Jean, and Rebecca Wittman from the University of Toronto. The Auschwitz-Birkenau camp was Nazi Germany’s largest camp and at its peak held over 400,000 prisoners, mostly Jews, but also Roma, Soviet POWs and Polish political prisoners. Its gas chamber and crematorium killed over one million people. The Soviet Red Army liberated the camp 75 years ago in January 27, 1945. (January 24, 2020)
