Canada–EU Summit: PM Trudeau Holds a News Conference
Prime Minister Justin Trudeau holds a joint news conference in St. John’s with European Council President Charles Michel and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen as the 19th Canada–European Union Leaders’ Summit concludes.
They discuss the launch of a green alliance on energy and climate change, and a new digital partnership between Canada and the European Union, as well as the EU becoming the latest partner in a global carbon pricing challenge. The prime minister also announces Canada is donating additional assault rifles and ammunition to Ukraine amid that country’s ongoing war with Russia.
Prime Minister Trudeau faces questions from reporters on issues including the EU’s ban on seal products, Canada’s involvement in a major EU scientific research program, temporary four-day ceasefire between Israel and Hamas, and the Conservative party’s opposition to a bill that would implement an updated Canada-Ukraine free trade agreement.
