Federal Ministers Announce Temporary Handgun Import Ban – August 5, 2022

At a news conference in Etobicoke, Ont., federal ministers Marco Mendicino (public safety) and Mélanie Joly (foreign affairs) announce a temporary ban on the importation of restricted handguns. The ban will begin on August 19 and will remain in effect until a proposed national freeze on the buying, selling, and importation of handguns comes into force. Bill C-21, which would implement the proposed freeze, is currently before Parliament. Liberal MP Yvan Baker (Etobicoke Centre) also takes part in the news conference.
