B.C. Indigenous Coalition Criticizes Federal Closures of Salmon Farms
At a news conference on Parliament Hill, chiefs and leaders of the Coalition of First Nations for Finfish Stewardship discuss the impact of federal policy decisions on the salmon farming industry in British Columbia. The group is opposing the federal government’s recent decision not to renew licenses for 15 open-net Atlantic salmon farms around the Discovery Islands, and is calling for the replacement of Fisheries Minister Joyce Murray. Speaking with reporters are Chris Roberts, chief councillor of the Wei Wai Kum First Nation, Albert Charlie, hereditary chief and councillor of the Gwa’sala-‘Nakwaxda’xw Nation, and Harvey Robinson, hereditary chief of the Kitasoo Xai’xais Nation.
