Speaking with reporters following his cabinet's two-day retreat in Vancouver, British Columbia Premier John Horgan announces that he will not seek re-election in the next provincial general election, which is scheduled to take place in 2024. He will stay on as premier until his successor is chosen and has asked the provincial New Democrats to hold a leadership convention in the fall. Horgan has led the party since 2014. A confidence-and-supply agreement with the BC Green Party allowed the NDP to form government in 2017 and Horgan was sworn in as premier on July 18, 2017. He announced in November 2021 that he was diagnosed with throat cancer, following a previous bout with bladder cancer in 2008. (no interpretation)
