Memorial Marking Fourth Anniversary of Flight PS752 Downing – January 8, 2024
The Association of Families of Flight PS752 Victims hosts a ceremony in Richmond Hill, Ont., to commemorate the fourth anniversary of the downing of Ukraine International Airlines Flight PS752. Fifty-five Canadian citizens and 30 permanent residents were among the 176 people killed in the January 8, 2020, downing of the aircraft by two surface-to-air missiles fired by Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC). Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, Foreign Affairs Minister Mélanie Joly, Conservative Deputy Leader Melissa Lantsman, Ukraine's Ambassador to Canada Yuliya Kovaliv, Association president Navaz Ebrahim, and Association spokesperson Kourosh Doustshenas are among the speakers at the commemorative ceremony.
In July 2023, Canada, Sweden, Ukraine, and the United Kingdom jointly filed an application with the International Court of Justice as part of efforts to hold Iran accountable for the downing. On today's anniversary, the four countries have initiated dispute settlement proceedings before the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) against Iran for its failure to refrain from using weapons against a civil aircraft in flight.
