At a news conference in Ottawa, First Nations leaders share the results of a new report on the potential cost of closing open-net salmon farms in British Columbia. The report, which was written by economics firm RIAS Inc. and commissioned by the BC Salmon Farmers Association, estimates the federal government’s proposed phase-out of open-net farms by 2029 would result in $9 billion in costs to taxpayers.
Providing remarks are Dallas Smith, spokesperson of First Nations for Finfish Stewardship and member of the Tlowitsis Nation, Isaiah Robinson, deputy chief of the Kitasoo Xai’xais Nation, and David Kiemele, managing director of Cermaq Canada. (November 28, 2024) (no interpretation)
