C-62: Rights Organizations Urge Changes to MAID Bill – February 23, 2024
On Parliament Hill in Ottawa, representatives from Inclusion Canada and a number of groups that advocate for the rights of Canadians with disabilities outline their concerns with Bill C-62, the federal government's proposed legislation that would delay the planned expansion of medical assistance in dying (MAID) to those suffering solely from a mental illness. They are calling for the swift passage of the bill with an amendment to repeal the expansion altogether. They also urge the government to table further legislation that would bring MAID into alignment with disability rights. Taking part in the press conference is Kurt Goddard (executive director, legal & public affairs, Inclusion Canada), Kerri Joffe (staff lawyer, Arch Disability Law Centre), Bonnie Brayton (CEO, DAWN Canada) and Heather Walkus (chairperson, Council of Canadians with Disabilities).
