Chrystia Freeland on Housing Affordability, Toronto's Finances, APEC Meeting
In Toronto, Finance Minister Chrystia Freeland announces a $1.2-billion federal investment to build 2,644 rental units across the city. She is joined by Justice Minister Arif Virani, Mayor Olivia Chow, and Hamid Ghadaki from Times Group Corporation. The funding is being provided as fully repayable low-interest loans through the Rental Construction Financing Initiative.
Minister Freeland is asked about the concerns from premiers that investments from the Housing Accelerator Fund are flowing directly to municipalities rather than the provinces and territories. She also faces questions on other issues including the federal government's involvement in the working group to ensure the long-term stability of Toronto's finances, her recent participation in the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) finance ministers' meeting, and Teck Resources Ltd.'s plan to sell its coal business.
