Cybersecurity: Federal Ministers Discuss New Legislation – June 14, 2022

At a news conference on Parliament Hill, federal ministers Marco Mendicino (public safety) and François-Philippe Champagne (innovation, science and industry) outline measures contained in the federal government’s newly tabled legislation aimed at strengthening cybersecurity in the federally regulated financial, telecommunications, energy, and transportation industries. Under Bill C-26, companies would be required to report cyberattacks or face possible penalties. Canadian companies would also be prohibited from using products and services from high-risk suppliers. The new legislation follows the government’s announcement on May 19, 2022, that it intended to ban Huawei and ZTE equipment from Canada's telecommunications systems over national security concerns.
