Inuit Leaders Discuss Report on Nunavut’s Housing Crisis – November 27, 2023
Inuit leaders Johannes Lampe (president of Nunatsiavut) and Aluki Kotierk (president of Nunavut Tunngavik) join federal housing advocate Marie-Josée Houle to discuss the advocate’s report on the housing crisis in Inuit communities. Melva Williams (acting minister of language, tourism and culture, Nunatsiavut government) and Levi Barnabas (vice-president, Qikiqtani Inuit Association) also take part in the news conference in Ottawa.
Based on her visits to Nunavut and to Nunatsiavut where she met with community members, Houle concludes that the right of Inuit to adequate housing is being violated. Recommendations in her report include the call for the federal government to transfer jurisdiction over Inuit housing programs and services to Inuit governments.
