Outcome of Trudeau-Legault Meeting – June 10, 2024
Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and his Quebec counterpart François Legault met in Quebec City on Monday, June 10, to discuss immigration. In addition to offering $750 million over five years to offset the costs of managing asylum seekers in the province, Ottawa has pledged to help Quebec with asylum applications, francization and work permit processing. Our host Omayra Issa discusses this file with National Post reporter Catherine Lévesque, political scientist Geneviève Tellier and Rémy Trudel, a former PQ immigration minister.
The UN's Global Alliance of National Human Rights Institutions will conduct a special review of the Canadian Human Rights Commission's “A” accreditation. Following this review, Canada could be downgraded to “B” status for the first time in its history, losing the right to participate in the UN Human Rights Council as well as its right to vote in this body. This decision follows a complaint lodged by a coalition of unions and Canadian human rights organizations as a result of federal findings confirming the existence of anti-Black discrimination at the Canadian Human Rights Commission. We speak to one of the complainants, Bernadette Betchi, who works at the Human Rights Commission.
