The Great Canadian Debates – Quebec’s Secession from Canada
Stéphane Dion (former Liberal Party leader) and Daniel Turp (former Bloc Québécois MP and Parti Québécois MNA) debate Quebec’s future and its status within Confederation, June 20, 2013. Jack Granatstein (co-founder of the Great Debates series) moderates. Later, audience members voice their opinions on these issues. Following the 1995 referendum on Quebec sovereignty, the federal government referred the issue to the Supreme Court of Canada. Based on the Supreme Court ruling, the federal government enacted the Clarity Act, which set guidelines for future referenda and any ensuing negotiations on sovereignty.
