Govt Reaches Agreement with Former Indian Day School Students
On Parliament Hill, Crown-Indigenous Relations Minister Carolyn Bennett takes part in an event marking the tentative settlement of a class-action lawsuit by former students of Indian day schools. Garry McLean, a former student of a Manitoba day school and the lead plaintiff in the lawsuit, and Roger Augustine, Assembly of First Nations Regional Chief for New Brunswick and Prince Edward Island, also take part in the announcement. There are estimated to be between 120,000 and 140,000 survivors of the more than 700 government-funded day schools, where students suffered similar abuse to that inflicted on children who attended residential schools. The government has paid more than $5 billion in a class-action settlement with residential school survivors since that agreement was finalized in 2006. (December 6, 2018) (no interpretation)
