Senators Urge More Action on Rohingya Genocide
Senator Marilou McPhedran speaks with reporters in Ottawa about her motion that calls on Canada to invoke the United Nations genocide convention against Myanmar for the ongoing genocide against Rohingya Muslims and pursue a case before the International Court of Justice. She is joined by senator Salma Ataullahjan, Fareed Khan (Rohingya Human Rights Network), Kyle Matthews (Montreal Institute for Genocide and Human Rights Studies), and Rachel Vincent (Nobel Women's Initiative). In 2018, Canada formally recognized the atrocities against the Rohingya as genocide, and both houses of Parliament also voted to strip the honorary Canadian citizenship of Myanmar’s political leader Aung San Suu Kyi.
