COVID-19: Canada Responds
PM Trudeau on COVID-19, Vaccination Certificates, Censure of Defence Minister
Prime Minister Justin Trudeau addresses Canadians on the federal government's response to the ongoing COVID-19 (coronavirus disease) pandemic. Speaking virtually from his home at Rideau Cottage, where he is currently quarantining after his international trip to attend the G7 and NATO summits, he confirms that Canada will receive 68 million doses of the Moderna vaccine by the end of July. He also announces the federal government is working with the provinces to establish a national certification of vaccination status, which should be in place in the fall, that can be used by Canadians travelling internationally. The prime minister also expresses his support and continued confidence in Defence Minister Harjit Sajjan, in wake of the House of Commons' adoption of a motion to formally censure the minister. The Conservative party tabled the motion over the minister's handling of sexual misconduct in the Canadian Armed Forces and other files in his portfolio. The motion was passed by a vote of 169-151, but carries no formal consequences. (June 18, 2021)
