Ridings to Watch
Charleswood–St. James–Assiniboia–Headingley and Kildonan–St. Paul
CPAC’s Brandi Morin takes a look at two Winnipeg ridings that switched from Conservative to Liberal in 2015. Both ridings have significant immigrant populations, and taxes, affordability and climate change are kitchen table topics. Charleswood–St. James–Assiniboia–Headingley is a largely middle class riding west of the downtown, where the incumbent is Doug Eyolfson, a medical doctor. He is being challenged by former city councillor Marty Morantz for the Conservatives, Ken St. George of the NDP and former Harper cabinet minister Steven Fletcher running for the People’s Party of Canada. Kildonan–St.Paul is a suburban riding north of the city core where the incumbent is MaryAnn Mihychuk, a former cabinet minister in the government of Justin Trudeau. The Conservatives are running Raquel Dancho, Evan Krosney is the New Democrat and Rylan Reed is carrying the Green Party colours.
Elmwood–Transcona
CPAC’s Brandi Morin reports from the Manitoba riding of Elmwood–Transcona, where in 2015 the race came right down to the wire and only 61 votes separated the New Democrat Daniel Blaikie from the incumbent Conservative Lawrence Toet. The 61 votes were the smallest margin of victory of any riding that year and we could see the same razor-thin result this time around as the main characters Blaikie and Toet are both back. The Liberals, who were only 2,000 votes behind, are being represented this time around by former crown attorney Jennifer Malabar. Running for the Green Party is Kelly Manweiler.

Red River College journalism instructor Joanne Kelly serves as moderator, with journalists Richard Cloutier (Global), Marcy Markusa (CBC) and Jeff Keele (CTV) putting questions to the party leaders. Manitoba 2016 Provincial Election
CPAC’s Gosia Sawicka Fazio reports on the provincial campaign in Manitoba, where the NDP is trying to extend their reign for another four years. A 2013 decision to raise the provincial sales tax remains unpopular. Combined with an internal challenge to the party’s leadership, it's made this campaign a challenging one for Greg Selinger and the NDP. The Progressive Conservative party led by Brian Pallister has produced a lengthy list of campaign promises to woo voters. Among them is a promise to reverse the sales tax hike. Hoping to capitalize on the popularity of federal leader Justin Trudeau, the provincial Liberals under lawyer Rana Boukhari are campaigning on a pledge to fund all-day kindergarten. The Liberals, with only one seat at dissolution, hope to make significant gains. Voters go to the polls in Manitoba on April 19.

2013 Byelection – Provencher
CPAC's Alan Waterman reports on the by-election in Provencher, Man. Provencher may be best known among historians for the 1873 election of Louis Riel, but most recently it was represented by former public safety minister Vic Toews, who stepped down in July 2013. Hoping to capitalize on the riding's predilection for returning Conservative candidates with sizable pluralities (Toews won by over 20,000 votes in 2011) is Ted Falk, president of the Steinbach Credit Union and Diamond Construction. Running for the NDP, who finished second in 2011, is Natalie Courcelles Beaudry, an assistant to NDP MLA Ron Lemieux and a former parliamentary page. Terry Hayward, who finished third in 2011, is returning to run for the Liberals. Hayward, a farmer from Anola, is a retired former public servant. Janine Gibson, the past president of the Canadian Organic Growers Association, is running for the Green party.
