Selection Committee: January 25, 2021: Senators debate whether to implement a secret ballot system to fill the speaker pro tempore position for the remainder of the parliamentary session. On December 9, 2020, the committee nominated Pierrette Ringuette as the interim Senate Speaker Pro Tempore, the acting speaker whenever the speaker is unable to oversee a sitting of the Senate. Senator Ringuette’s nomination has yet to be confirmed through a vote via secret ballot in the Senate.

Selection Committee - November 2, 2020: Despite his reservations, senators elect Progressive Senate Group Senator Terry Mercer as committee chair. The committee then proceeds to discuss the political composition of various committees. There are currently five political groupings withing the Senate: Independent Senate Group, Conservative, Canadian Senators Group, Progressive Senate Group, and non-affiliated. Senators also discuss a motion that would allow the Senate to sit virtually in light of the global COVID-19 pandemic. The Senate has been sitting in person during the pandemic, while the House of Commons has moved to a hybrid in-person/virtual sitting model.
