Michaëlle Jean, Canada’s ex-governor general and former secretary general of the International Organisation of La Francophonie, talks to Esther Bégin about her family’s escape from Haiti’s dictatorial regime of Papa Doc Duvalier, her youth spent in the small town of Thetford Mines and her work in international diplomacy. Being the first Black woman named governor general of Canada at the same time the United States elected its first Black president would be a defining moment in her career. But it is in controversy that she ended her term as head of la Francophonie.

Female Diplomats Discuss the New Era in Global Diplomacy
The Centre for International Policy Studies at the University of Ottawa organizes a discussion featuring an all-female panel of ambassadors and high commissioners on the eve of International Women's Day. The discussion is entitled "Disorder, Disruptions, Directions: A New Era in Global Diplomacy?" Moderated by Madelaine Drohan, Canadian correspondent for The Economist, panellists Susan le Jeune d’Allegeershecque, British high commissioner to Canada; Natasha Smith, Australian high commissioner to Canada; Kareen Rispal, French ambassador to Canada; Sabine Sparwasser, German ambassador to Canada; and Shakilla Umutoni Kazimbaya, head of mission for the High Commission of Rwanda to Canada, discuss topics such as the role of women in diplomacy. Women and global issues: examining challenges for women and girls around the world. Alison speaks to Sanam Naraghi-Anderlini, co-founder and executive director of the International Civil Society Action Network, about the critical role women can play in conflict zones. Khadija Arfaoui, a Tunisian peace and rights activist, and Abeer Pamuk, a Syrian humanitarian worker, discuss the situation on the ground for women in their respective countries. Liza Muringo Kimbo from the Africa Alliance of Ipas talks about how Canada's recent announcement of funding in support of women's global reproductive health and rights will help her agency deliver services throughout the world. Farah Mohamed, founder and CEO G(irls)20, speaks to Alison about the role her organization plays in cultivating female leaders through education, entrepreneurial training, and international experiences. Finally, we hear from some young women who spoke in the House of Commons, this week, as part of a special initiative for International Women's Day called "Daughters of the Vote."

The International Development Research Centre (IDRC) hosts an event in honour of International Women's Day,titled "Knowledge to Action: Improving Women's Lives." Participants discuss overcoming violence against women with strong communities, legal protection and crime prevention. Adelle Blackett (McGill University) examines the relationship between the deficient regulation of domestic work and the perpetuation of racialized, colonial violence against women. Donny Meertens (Javeriana University, Bogota, Colombia) discusses strategies used by indigenous women victims of conflict to access justice and seek to redress the violations of their rights. Veronica Martinez Solares (International Organization for Victim Assistance) focuses on the situation of women victims of organized crime in Mexico. Later, Anju Dhillon (parliamentary secretary for status of women) provides closing remarks. (March 8, 2016)

Stella Muthuri (African Population Health and Resarch Panel in Nairobi) and Shelley Clark (McGill University) discuss the role that improved childcare options can play in providing better economic and education opportunities for women in Nairobi's slums. Arijit Nandi (McGill University) evaluates the impact of an affordable daycare program on women's health and economic well-being in Rajasthan, India. On April 6th, 2010, the University of Ottawa held a international symposium on Haiti entitled "Haiti Today, Haiti Tomorrow: Contrasting perspectives." The opening session featured Governor General Michaëlle Jean, Léo Mérorès (Haiti's ambassador to the United Nations), and Josseline Féthière (Haiti's minister of trade and industry).
Day of Hope: Roundtable on Reconciliation
The Legacy of Hope Foundation and the Aboriginal Healing Foundation host a roundtable discussion, Ottawa, Ont., June 11, 2009. This event marks the one-year anniversary of the federal government’s apology to former students in Canada’s residential school system. Following an opening address by Governor General Michaëlle Jean, speakers explore approaches to healing and reconciliation in the post-apology era. The panellists are Phil Fontaine (National Chief of the Assembly of First Nations), John Ralston Saul (an author), and Joseph Robert (the hereditary chief of Gwa wa enuk First Nation). The panellists also respond to questions from audience members. Elder Irene Lindsay (a cultural and spiritual teacher at Minwaashin Lodge) offers smudge and an opening prayer. Isabella Tatar, the executive director of the Legacy of Hope Foundation, makes opening remarks. Rosemary Thompson from CTV News moderates the panel discussion.

The Library and Archives Canada Forum on Canadian Democracy and Status of Women Canada presents an International Women's Day event, entitled “Strong Women, Strong World,” Ottawa, Ont., March 8, 2008. The first session of the day focused on the topic "Aboriginal Women and Government." The panellists are Kathleen McHugh (chair of the Assembly of First Nations Women's Council), Jody Wilson (commissioner of the British Columbia Treaty Commission) and Kiera Ladner (Canada research chair in Indigenous Politics and Governance at the University of Manitoba).
